Brunch is a very popular weekend activity in the city of Toronto. The typical brunch options include your go-to eggs benedict and pancakes dishes, so it’s rare for restaurants to be able to successfully put a spin on brunch. It’s even more rare for restaurants to successfully pull off southern BBQ style brunch, but The Carbon Bar is definitely able to pull it off.
A highlight of the brunch menu at The Carbon Bar includes their version of Chicken & Waffles. The chicken is deep fried with buttermilk to give it a perfect crunchy exterior, while retaining very juicy innards. The citrus crema does a great job at balancing the overall saltiness of the fried chicken, while the waffles provide just the right contrast in texture.
The Huevos El Carbon is a spin on the traditional Huevos Rancheros Mexican-style breakfast dish. This version comes with a very hearty and satisfying base of black means mixed with chorizo, topped with sunny-side eggs and some manchego cheese. The pico de gallo adds a great layer of sweet and spiciness to the dish, with the lime providing extra zest if needed. The guacamole acts as a great layering substance to the dish, especially when wrapping all the ingredients into the warm tortillas.
Overall, we were pleasantly surprised with both the quality and portion of the food. In talking to the staff, we learned that they even have live music during brunch on Sundays, and that customers who share their brunch experience on social media can get a complimentary mimosa on the house if they tag The Carbon Bar. In summary, The Carbon Bar serves a fantastic southern take on the typical brunch-fare menu options, and we will definitely come back again for brunch and dinner!
