The first Quesada location was opened in 2004 and has grown to 78 restaurants across Canada since, serving burritos, quesadillas, tacos and more with fresh ingredients and Mexican flavours. At a media event held at Quesada (250 Dundas St W) hosted by Feed My Phone, we had the pleasure of meeting Steve Gill, the founder and chief recipe officer of Quesada Burritos & Tacos. We were also introduced to the “Joy of Mex”, the friendly, positive attitude held by the restaurant staff to provide delicious and tasty food.
On the menu for the media preview, there was a mix of current menu favourites, as well as a number of “test kitchen” items that were still being refined. The existing menu items were by far much more enjoyable than the test kitchen items.
The ancho pork mini quesadillas were the best tasting items that evening. The pork was well spiced and tender, and there was a sufficient amount of melted cheese. However, the amount of filling was lacking and the quesadilla itself was quite thin.
The spicy chicken on tostadas was also on point. The variety of toppings on the tostada paired well with the chicken, and the spicy aioli gave it a nice kick.
Unfortunately, the test kitchen items were nothing to boast about. The portobello & poblano soft tacos were barely edible. Eating a mouthful of chili pepper wrapped in a soft taco was not welcoming, and the portobello mushroom, although juicy, only added to the overly soft texture.
The chorizo and sweet potato mini burritos were bland and heavy. The chorizo could barely be found and the sweet potato made the burrito taste very gooey and soggy. The burrito soup had an overpowering amount of pepper.
While Quesada’s traditional burritos and quesadillas are up to par, their test kitchen items have still yet to be perfected before being served to the public. Looking forward to seeing new, innovative items on their menu in the future.
