Two full hours of learning about oysters, how to properly shuck them and also the opportunity to eat 18 oysters? Sign us up! We were recently given the amazing opportunity to attend Oyster Boy’s Shuck U program and we walked away both impressed with the program and our bellies satisfied with the fantastic oysters.
Oyster Boy has been a neighborhood favorite in the Queen West area for quite some time, and we were excited to be invited to attend their Shuck U program. The program is a full two hours, where the staff & employees at Oyster Boy do their best to teach the audience about buying, shucking and presenting oysters.
We were able to get an in-depth lecture on how oysters are cultivated in a sustainable fashion, and the significance of their contribution to their ecosystem. Not only that, but we learned about the tips and tricks on how to grow oysters, and even some knowledge on how the business is run!
After that, it was off to the races to learn first-hand on how to properly shuck oysters from the owner himself Professor Adam Colquhoun! The staff were experienced and very patient with us as we initially struggled to shuck the oysters properly, but with their careful teaching methods we soon got the hang of things and quickly proceeded to shuck the oysters. They even provided oyster knives for us which we got to keep!
Overall, we greatly enjoyed the entertaining and informative program. It was very interactive with the fantastic staff, plus we got to sample a wide variety of oysters after having shucked them! We ‘graduated’ from the course with our oyster knives, along with some Oyster Boy apparel (t-shirt & touque) as well!
