At Yonge and Finch in Toronto, change is constant amidst the restaurants and businesses that line the area. The latest addition to the neighbourhood is Menya Fuji, an unassuming, simple Japanese restaurant focused on ramen.
Menya Fuji offers a number of appetizers to get started. The takoyaki dish come in an order of 5. Each one is packed with 2 pieces of octopus (!!) within a crispy exterior, however the inside is quite doughy. The chicken karaage was very juicy with a thick crispy skin. Each piece was quite large and tender.
We tried the Tonkotsu Shio ramen which is a pork bone broth with a salt base. The noodles in general at Menya Fuji taste fresh with a nice bounce to them. The chashu was just a little tough but the soft boiled egg was cooked perfectly. The broth was rich however did get salty at the bottom of the bowl (as expected); we like our tonkotsu broth creamy and found that some other ramen shops in the area serve it creamier than here.
The Fuji mountain ramen is one of their signature ramens, containing almost all their toppings with extra servings of chashu and noodles. This is definitely a good value for the amount you get, however we found that the mountain was filled with bean sprouts when we expected more noodles.
We added an additional ramen to share: the Cold Veg Soba Ramen, which is a bowl of thick cold noodles topped with tomatoes, lettuce, egg, corn and soba sauce. This bowl was incredibly refreshing and is the dish we’re most looking forward to returning for! The sauce is reminiscent of a Japanese sesame salad dressing and is creamy yet light. It has a bit of a kick to it which adds further to the flavours.
There are also a number of desserts offered at Menya Fuji which were all surprisingly satisfying. The ice cream is sourced from a private supplier and the green tea, sesame and taro were all strong and flavourful. The Godiva Cheesecake and Matcha Cheesecake were both decadent and creamy.
As of writing, Menya Fuji is offering a grand opening special of 10% off if customers post on social media. As well, they have 50% off specified bowls of ramen from 3pm-5pm on weekdays! It’s the perfect time to check them out and enjoy a comforting bowl of ramen.
